Courage and Strength Over Fear and Doubt

Sometimes it can be really difficult to be courageous. Or strong. Or bold. Or confident. We face challenges every day, whether it be at work, home, within our relationships, or even in standing up to others regarding our own convictions. It can be much easier to simply blend in with the crowd. Get lost in the background. Choose to be a follower when you were destined to be a leader.

Choose Courage.

Hello! Hope you all have had a wonderful weekend, and are enjoying your Sunday! I haven’t been feeling the greatest this past week, so our weekend was pretty low-key. I am feeling better today though, so I guess the rest and relaxation really did the trick 🙂

So today I was reading through some various, random scriptures, and came across one of my favorites:

“For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.”

Being Like Jonah.

So…my apologies for being MIA for the past couple weeks. I would tell you it’s been a crazy time with trying to figure out my new work schedule, along with a trip back to Michigan for a dear friends wedding, but those would just be excuses. And I’m really trying to adapt a new “no excuses” mindset, so I will just simply say sorry.

Anyways, the new job is going well, and the Michigan trip was AWESOME [can you tell I miss home, jut a little bit]. Even though I wasn’t in Grand Rapids [my homeland] for very long, it was still great to see family. I got to spend all of Wednesday last week with my mom going to our favorite places—Marie Catrib’s, downtown Holland, Hope College, Lemonjello’s, Lake Michigan, the cottage—needless to say, it was total awesomeness. And we even got a decent beach walk in despite the freezing, gale-force winds.

Use Your Talents.

Something hit me this morning.

Randomly, as I was driving to work, I started thinking about the parable of the three servants in the Bible. You know, the one where their master goes off on business, leaving them each with varying amounts of talents [or gold coins/money], along with specific instructions regarding the use of said talents. He wanted the servants to do something with the money given to them—something that would benefit him upon his return.

When the master arrived home after his travels, he was pleased with the first two servants because they wisely chose to invest and grow the amount of money given to them. So, in reward for their services, the master put each of them in charge of even more money. However, the third servant chose not to do anything with the money given to him. He was afraid of the master, and chose to hide the money away so as not to lose it. The master’s money was safe, but nothing had been gained or accomplished from the servant possessing it. This made the master angry, and he threw the third servant out of his home.

Your Will Be Done.

Hello! Hope you all are having a great Tuesday so far. Can you believe it’s April already? Craziness I tell you. Did you all have a wonderful Easter? James and I ended up going to church on Saturday night instead of Sunday morning–Gateway Church can get really busy on Easter Sunday–and we both really enjoyed the service. It was strange not being in Michigan for Easter with family, but overall we had a great day!

Throughout the days leading up to Easter last week I read Matthew’s account of what happened on those days so very long ago. It was awesome to read what Jesus was going through during those days, and what he ultimately did for us in dying on the cross for our sins. One verse in particular stuck out to me as I was reading…

“He went a little farther and bowed with his face to the ground, praying, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”

Running You Race.

Hello! Hope you all are having a great Tuesday so far. It has been a busy couple of weeks around here lately, and time has really flown! I can’t believe we are already at the end of March…craziness I tell you. Last weekend the temperatures were in the low 80’s, so James and I met up with some friends in Grapevine to walk around the historic downtown area. We had a great time poking into all the little shops, and were even able to watch a ‘glass blowing’ demonstration [a really cool form of art where the artists actually sculpt hot glass by blowing into it and molding it into different shapes—very neat]. On Sunday James’ sister was in town on her way back from a missions trip, so we were able to spend the afternoon catching up with her. It was so great to see her! Overall I am enjoying Texas, but I definitely miss being close to our families.

In other news—last week I found out that I am going to be starting a new job this coming Monday! I have loved working at Starbucks, but I will be moving on to something that is a bit closer to my chosen career path—I am going to be working in the marketing department at Daystar Television Network! I’m a little nervous to start, but also very excited! But don’t worry—I’m not going anywhere. I am still going to be posting regularly here on the blog, and am still going to be making some improvements in the very near future—so stay tuned!

Mustard Seed Faith.

Good morning and happy Wednesday! Hope you all are having a great day so far. I have the day off today, which is always a good thing:) Although I’m getting to the point where I can’t really sleep in much past 7:30 or 8:00 anymore…I must be getting old. Ha. Anyways, I wanted to share a verse I read from Matthew this morning. It’s an oldie, but definitely a goodie…

“I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

Matthew 17:20

This is pretty amazing…and even more amazing when you think about how small a mustard seed really is—especially in comparison to a mountain. Those seeds are really tiny! It really goes to show just how powerful our faith can be. If we have even a tiny amount of faith, we are able to move mountain-sized things in our lives. What once seemed completely impossible is made entirely possible through faith.

If there is something going on in your life that seems impossible, or maybe a situation that seems rather hopeless, don’t give up. Have faith. Nothing will be impossible for you when you choose to put your faith in Christ. Don’t be afraid to step out and take that next step—you never know what you will be able to accomplish through faith and the power of Christ.

Stuck in the Past.

Hello and Happy Friday! Hope you all are having a great day so far. It’s kinda gloomy here—definitely a good day to cuddle up with a good book and a warm kitty:) This week has been crazy busy for some reason, so I am definitely looking forward to the weekend. Although I wish my family was coming to visit again, like they did last weekend. Ah well, I’m sure we will all see each other again soon. How about you? Any fun plans for the weekend?

Thought I would share something I read from Genesis yesterday about Lot and his family, and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. When Sodom was being destroyed, God rescued Lot’s family. As they were hastily leaving the city, God’s messengers told Lot’s family not to look back on the city or they would surely die. Seems like a simple command, but unfortunately, Lot’s wife decided to look back…

“But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.”

Faith Alone.

Good Morning! How’s your Tuesday going so far? Mine has been going well—just catching up on a few things after my long weekend with the family:) It was so great to see them, catch up, and show them around Dallas a bit. Samson also had an excellent time playing with everyone, and is quite exhausted today—he has been sleeping all morning. While it was great to see them, saying goodbye is always hard for me. So, needless to say, I am feeling a little down today. At least I have a sleeping kitty to keep me company today:)

Anyways, this morning I was reading in Romans about how we are saved only by faith—not our works, not our good deeds, just through faith in Jesus.

Being Courageous.

Hello and Happy Monday! Hope you all had a great weekend. Ours was pretty low key…actually really low key. We did take an evening excursion to Trader Joes though on Saturday, which was excellent, and made a quick stop at our favorite bubble tea shop which was right down the road [so convenient]. But, other than that, nothing new to report.
In other news, I’ve been reading the book of Esther over the weekend. If you haven’t actually read the whole book, I would encourage you to do so—it’s very good! If you’re not familiar with Esther’s story, let me give you a brief background. Esther was a Jew, who was chosen amongst many other beautiful women to be the new queen in Persia. During her time as queen, an evil advisor convinced the king to issue a decree stating that anyone could kill any Jew at any time beginning on a certain set date in the near future. The king wasn’t fully aware of what this decree entailed, and definitely did not know that his own queen was, in fact, a Jew. When Esther learned about the decree from her cousin Mordecai, she was devastated. Devastated and afraid. But, under her cousins’ instruction, she decided to approach the king [which was illegal and punishable by death] and plead with him for the lives of her people. In the end, the king accepts her, listens to her, and eventually executes the evil advisor who instigated the imminent slaughter in the first place. He then gave the Jews the right to fight back and defend themselves against anyone who would attempt to harm them. In the end the Jews were saved—all because of Esther’s bravery. But just because she was brave, doesn’t mean she wasn’t afraid.
“For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this.”
Esther 4:14
Esther didn’t have any of the usual qualification for becoming a queen in Persia, and the circumstances that brought about her queen-ship were far from ordinary. But, God knew what he was doing. He knew about Haman’s [the evil advisor] plot to kill the Jews before he even spoke of it. He knew that someone who supported the Jews needed to be in authority to save them at that specific time. So, what did he do? He placed Esther in a position of authority, granted her favor with the king, and through her courage saved the Jews from imminent destruction.
She was right where God wanted her to be, exactly when he wanted her to be there. She was faithful to God’s promptings in her life, and her people reaped the benefits of her obedience.
We can learn a valuable lesson from Esther’s life. While we may not be destined to become royalty, or to save an entire nation from destruction, God has a specific plan and purpose for each of our lives. He has things for us to do, and a timeline for us to follow. It’s so important to be doing what he wants us to do when he wants us to do it. And the plans he has for us may require us to be courageous. They may not always be the most comfortable or easy actions for us to take—Esther definitely didn’t have an easy task. But, the end results will always be worth any discomfort we may initially experience.
