The Problem with Instant Gratification.

Hello! Hope you all are having a great Thursday so far. I’m a little off in my days this week—I keep thinking today is Friday for some reason. Bummer. Anyways, I was reading in Genesis this morning again, and came across something I thought I would share. Remember the story of Jacob? How he worked seven years for his wife Rachel, only to be given her sister, Leah, instead? And then, he had to go and work another seven years to finally have Rachel? That’s fourteen years! That’s a long time.

“So Jacob server seven years [plus another seven] to get Rachel, but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her.”

Genesis 29:20

Romantic, right? But, while it may have only seems like mere days to love-crazed Jacob, it was still fourteen total years before he received what he desired most in the world—Rachel.

Waiting Patiently.

Good Morning! How is your Monday going so far? Mine has been going well—I have the day off work, but lots and lots of errands and things around the house to get done today. Fighting hard to be productive, if you know what I mean:)

Anyways, I thought I would share a Psalm that I read this morning. It was written by David during a difficult season of his life, and his words really stuck out to me this morning…

“How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and every day have sorrows in my heart? How long will my enemies triumph over me?

Look on me and answer, O Lord my God. Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death; my enemy will say, “I have overcome him,” and my foes will rejoice when I fall. 

But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, for he has been good to me.”

Never Give Up.

It’s another beautiful day here in Texas—I’m still missing my Michigan Fall quite a bit, but the sunshine is definitely nice:) We have an awesome deck/patio area in our new apartment, which I have been thoroughly enjoying at all times of day. Our location is quite close to the massive DFW Airport, but the constant planes flying overhead haven’t been too annoying—they are actually kind of soothing in a weird way, and are contributing to the little travel bug growing inside of me. I mean, how could you not think about traveling when you live underneath a flight path? Just saying. Anyways. I was reading again in Matthew this morning, and came across a favorite passage of mine…
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.”
Matthew 7:7-8
It’s comforting to know that when we diligently seek the Lord, and our wills line up with his own, he will grant us the desires of our hearts. However, a lot of people [myself included at times] never experience the desires of their heart. Why? Because they give up to easily. Have you ever asked God for something? I mean, really asked God for something? How persistent were you? So often we ask God for the desires of our hearts a few half-hearted times, only to be disappointed and give up when things don’t ‘magically’ turn your way. When you think about it, the word ‘seeking’ does not mean instant gratification. It means to search long and hard for something in order to receive or find it in the end. Our world is so fast. We thrive on speed, and on getting things done instantaneously. Unfortunately for our culturally programmed brains, God doesn’t always work instantaneously. In fact, some times he is downright slow in our mind. But, he always makes everything work out according to his perfect will and in his precise timing. We need to patiently seek his face, and ask him—with the right heart and motives—for the things we need. He will always be faithful to us when we are faithful to him. If things don’t change the way you want them to right away, keep asking and praying to God about them. Don’t give up—God always hears us. Sometimes it may take longer and require more faith than we had originally planned.
This is something I am learning more and more each day. Some times its hard to be patient—I just want everything to happen right when I ask. But, God is teaching me to be patient and wait upon his perfect timing. If this is something you struggle with as well, ask God today to help you in overcoming it.

His Ways are Higher

Hello and happy gorgeous Wednesday! It is a beautiful day hereJ I was reading from Isaiah out on the deck this morning (yay) and I came across this familiar passage…
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heaves are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Isaiah 55:8-9
I know I’ve read this passage before, but it really stuck out to me today for some reason. Lately I’ve been struggling with discerning God’s plans from my own. It’s hard sometimes to differentiate between the two. This passage reminded me how important it is to truly seek out God’s plans for our lives and diligently follow those plans always. The footnotes for the scripture say it best. “It is foolish to try and fit God into our mold—to make his plans and purposes conform to ours. Instead, we must strive to fit into his plans.”
So true. No matter how hard I try, my plans are never going to work out as well as God’s. This can be a difficult thing to admit, especially for someone like me who always loves to have a plan. But it’s crucial to do so if we ever want to get where we are supposed to be in life. His plans are perfect, while ours are nowhere even close.
For me, I need to focus on trusting him to reveal his plans to me by learning to be patient, and by following the passions he has placed in my heart. I truly believe that God gives us ideas, passions and talents for a reason. He wants us to do the things we love because he is the one who placed those passions within us in the first place. Making the connection between his plans for our lives and the passions he has placed in our hearts is critical to fulfilling our purpose in life.
Is there something you are passionate about that you feel God calling you to pursue? Don’t wait any longer. Trust that he has a perfect plan for your life, and follow the promptings he places in your heart.

Hope in the Lord.

Happy Monday! Hopefully you guys all had a great weekend. We didn’t do too much over here, which was nice, but we did watch quite a bit of Olympic actionJ
I’m going to get right in to the portion of scripture I read from Isaiah over the weekend…more specifically one verse that happens to me a favorite of mine.
“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will sore on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
Isaiah 40:31
I love this verse. It always makes me think of the movie “Chariots of Fire”, which is one of my all time favorites. As I was reading it this time though, it hit me in a deep and personal place. When I read the footnotes for this verse, it mentioned how “hoping” in the Lord means to “trust” in him. Trusting in him helps us be prepared for when he speaks to us. “Then we will be patient when he asks us to wait and expect him to fulfill the promises found in his word.”
Lately I have been so tired—weary. I’ve been pretty stressed with different things going on in my life, and it is causing me to shut down emotionally and physically. I’m sure most of you have felt this way before at some time or another. I need to refocus and remember that God is in control, and that his plan for my life is perfect—I just need to trust in him to fulfill it in his own timing. Putting my trust in him completely will give me more energy and strength each day.
Have you been struggling lately? Do you feel tired or weary? Maybe it’s time to refocus, regroup, and remember that God is in control. Run to him, abide in him, and he will renew your strength.
